Ridgeway to Forty Hall May 11, 2026
Report: Monday, May 11, 2026
Distance Covered: 5.21 km
Time: 9.31 to 11.17
Walk: Ridgeway to Forty Hall
Enfield Chase, London, United Kingdom
Walkers observed on path: 11
Accessibility:
The path from the Ridgeway, which I walked today, is wide enough for two people to walk comfortably and others to pass. It is fairly flat until the walking path approaches Forty Hall estate, at which point there are cracks in the walking path and large roots narrowing into the side of the Forty Hall pig farm, which is very muddy and not well-drained. The path is not well-suited for those with mobility constraints. There is poor availability of benches and places to rest.
Navigation: There is not enough signage for walkers unfamiliar with the area. Where signage existed, only one broken sign was observed today, which needs repair. The other signs were well-marked and easy to read.
Fallen Trees & Debris: There was significant chopped wood debris across the walking path, much of which appeared to be sloppy wood-pruning rather than for biodiversity purposes, such as dead wood. A few trees had fallen, and a few more were looking as if they were tipping over very soon. The debris caused two issues for walkers – the first was a safety issue, and the second was that it blocked the flow of waterways needed to support animal and insect life. Further information is required to determine who owns the debris left by pruning and what the intentions are regarding the removal of debris that poses an issue to the walking path.
Fly tipping and litter: It was noted that there has been a reduction in litter on this path over the last few weeks; however, building-material fly tipping remains a concern. No dog fouling observed. Several observations of graffiti.
Safety: No anti-social behaviour or other threats encountered.
Other: In several locations, rope swings have been attached to ancient trees, causing damage when the rope snaps or threatening fragile, older trees. There was also a “romance corner” observed where a group of 6 trees have been covered in scratched in declarations of love on the bark.
