Lush Greenery and Birdies in Hilly Fields Park June 13, 2026

Accessibility & Navigation:

The path from the Ridgeway, which I walked today, is wide enough in most places for two people to walk comfortably and others to pass. It is fairly flat and can be accessed by buggies and wheelchairs in the  Hillyfields Park section and parts of the path near the Ridgeway. However, access in between is not that accessible, and paths narrow.   Families use Hillyfields Park, and it is very busy today.

Trees

Following tree pruning, a few large logs still needed clearing away, aside from the dead wood left for biodiversity.  We observed very lush green foliage throughout the park.

Debris, Litter and Safety

The park felt safe and no anti-social behaviour observed.  The bins provided were overflowing and inadequate for the footfall in the area, especially in Hillyfields.  Some graffiti was present.

Biodiversity

We observed that a few hedgerows had been cleared closer to the Ridgeway, and we were concerned about how this affected insects and birdlife that rely on these shrubs. Social weaving larvae webs were persistent and will be evaluated further by government agencies following last year’s Oak processionary moth issues.  It was nice to see nesting season underway and also to spot Skylarks in spots os open grassland that had been undisturbed long enough for them to nest.
