Ferny Hill to Trent Park May 24, 2026

Further information on the evaluation framework can be found on the “Methods” page.

Signage: There is limited signage in the wild areas along this path, and one needs to consult a digital map to navigate, as it is not obvious which trails lead where.  Some signage to guide and educate walkers about the plant and animal life present would be welcome. Only the obelisk in Trent Park had any historical signage, despite the WWII House of Secrets being only a few metres from the walking path.  The Trent Park side of the walk was well maintained, clean and had adequate signage.

Accessibility: This path does not have many rest points, has an elevation change, and is not suitable for those with mobility scooters, wheelchairs, or pushchairs.   An updated gate, bridge and refurbished crossing was easy to use at the halfway point of the walk.  There is a small bridge over a stream as walkers approach trent park from Ferny Hill which needs some attention and repair.

Debris, Fallen Trees & Litter: Many fallen trees and dead wood debris are visible.  There is one significant hazard: a tree is worryingly perched above a walking path and will collapse imminently. Some light litter is present. No waste or recycling bins available.  There is a treetops recreational area; there is a question as to what initial and ongoing environmental impact assessment was conducted to allow this installation to be built in an area of mature trees.

A fallen tree appears to have remained here for some time

Litter left amongst the beauty of the forest floor

Biodiversity: A significant variety of bird life was recorded along the path, including birds of prey. A variety of mature trees provided dense woodland, and ferns were widely observed. Damselflies, bees and butterflies were seen during the walk.

A variety of insects and fungi rely on wooden stumps

Ferns facilitate ecosystem recovery by acting as pioneers in disturbed areas, creating habitats that support increased biodiversity.

A lush and vibrant forest can be found on this walk

Graffiti: None observed.

Safety: No threats, anti-social behaviour or other threats noted.
